This is a handout made for the Norwegian tea group. It is a summary list of the aisatsu and things to keep in mind in the tea room.

Aisatsu

Start of lesson, everyone to the teacher.

• Konnichiwa, yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
  • (Hello, thank you [for teaching me today].)

End of lesson, everyone to the teacher.

• Domo arigatou gozaimashita.
  • (Thank you [for having taught us today].)

Before leaving the tea room to prepare.

• (Temae no namae) no junbi o sasete itadakimasu.
  • (I'm going to prepare [the name of the practice].)

Before starting temae, Host to teacher.

• (Temae no name) no keiko o yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
  • (Thank you for teaching me [the name of the practice].)

Before starting temae, Guest to teacher.

• Kyaku no keiko o yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
  • (Thank you for teaching me this guest practice.)

Before starting temae, Host and Guest to each other.

• Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
  • (Thank you [for practicing with me].)

After temae, Host and Guests to teacher.

• Domo arigatou gozaimashita.
  • (Thank you [for having taught us].)

After temae, Host and Guest to each other.

• Domo arigatou gozaimashita.
  • (Thank you [for having practiced with me].)
Clothing for tea practice
• Clean and nice looking clothes.
• Clean white socks.
• No jewellery or watches.

Behaviour in class

When someone is doing temae, please pay attention to what he/she is doing, as the teacher expects you to learn from what the other students are taught.

Avoid talking while another student is practising, especially about unrelated topics.

If you have a question, please ask it to the teacher and not your fellow students.

During the lesson one student should ask the teacher if he wants tea and sweets.
