Futaoki 蓋置き - may be requested for Haiken

Green, freshly cut bamboo (Ao Take) for hakobi and hakobidana temae- furo fushi flush with top; ro fushi below top. A star-shaped hole is cut in the septum to allow air in so the kettle lid does not form a vacuum (nevertheless it sometimes does, so be careful with flat Kama lids). In October, a type called "han-gare", half-dried, is used. These used to be regular green futaoki which had faded from the time they were first used but now, they are created by cutting a bamboo stalk half-way through during its growth so half of it dies. These are pretty but disgusting, conceptually.

White bamboo is mainly for Keiko only. It may be used for Chaji /chakai ONLY IF it has a Kao (personal monoglyph cypher) on it. In this case it may be used on Tana.

Mitsuningyo

Ceramic and metal futaoki are required by tana. There are an infinite number of designs but a set of 7 Rikyu konomi, derived from Karamono literati writing gear- ink stick rests, etc:

  1. hoya 火屋- only two-piece futaoki, remeniscent of a lidded koro; the Hishaku is never set on it; used for gyonogyo daisu temae and on Nagaita only.

  2. gotoku 五徳- tripod, only for time when Gotoku is not used for kettle

  3. ikanjin 井閑人- man at leisure (looking into well)
  4. mitsuba 三葉- three leaves
  5. kani 蟹- crab
  6. sazae 栄螺- sea snail
  7. mitsu ningyo 三人形- three dolls (children)
