Kensui is used for waste water during the Temae. When the host first enters he might have a Futaoki inside the kensui and a Hishaku resting on top of the kensui. In one particular Temae called Irekodate the Chawan will be inside the kensui when it is carried in. At that time the host carries it in front of himself with both hands. Otherwise the kensui is carried on the side away from the guests.
